Deer in the Headlights

In 1984 Paoli, Indiana a man steps out of his truck to move a log blocking his path when suddenly he is shot dead with a 12-gauge shotgun deer slug. Was this a case of mistaken identity by local hunters? Or was that same log in the road the night before?
